Sharks!
The countdown begins to kick off the 2023 swim season with the first practice scheduled for one week from tonight! Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool to join. We will have one Test the Waters (registration required) night on Tuesday, May 30 for those that are unsure whether their swimmer can swim the length of the pool. Please note that we are still finalizing paperwork with the Town of Broadway and we are planning to have everything in place ready to kick off the season next week. A lot has been happening behind scenes and some of the documents needed are still being fine tuned. We are excited that we have 89 swimmers already registered for the 2023 season and we know more are planning to register.
Updates are still needed, but a good amount of up-to-date information is already on our website. Sharks – Home of the Broadway, VA Sharks Swim Team (bwaysharks.com)
Practices (May 31-July 29) Champs (July 29): Last day to register for the 2023 season is Friday, June 2, 2023.
* Swimmers should bring a towel, goggles, and wear a one-piece bathing suit. Girls should have hair up. Swim caps will be available for purchase.
* We request bathing suits be green or black. They can be purchased on SwimOutlet, Amazon or some might become available for free or for a small price from swimmers that have outgrown their old ones. If you are one of these people, please respond to this email with more details about your suit.
Schedule Monday through Friday AM: Little Sharks (10 & Under) practice is from 8:30am – 9:15am and the Big Sharks (11 & Up) practice is from 9:15-10:15am. Please note morning practices do not begin until Monday, June 12, 2023. If you swam in a different age group than you were last year, please continue in that group unless otherwise notified.
Schedule Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday PM: Little Sharks (10 & Under) practice is from 7:00pm – 8:00pm and the Big Sharks (11 & Up) practice is from 8:00-9:00pm. Please note, no practices on Wednesday, June 14 or Tuesday, July 4. If you swam in a different age group than you were last year, please continue in that group unless otherwise notified.
Pick up and drop off: Swimmers will enter and exit practice through the main gate. Parents/guardian’s should not leave the immediate area (pool parking lot or park) in the event swimmers need to be dismissed, including due to weather.
Coming to practice: Please arrive to practice no more than 10 minutes before the start of practice and no later than the time of the start of practice. If attending the first group evening practice, all (including parents) should remain outside of the gates until after warmups. This will allow for the guests of the pool to leave and pool staff to clean the area. Come ready to swim with a suit on. If you have a pool pass and are at the pool that day, you will need to gather all your items and exit the pool and wait until the team is able to enter. Do not come to practice if you aren’t feeling well.
Leaving practice: Make sure to clean up the area that you placed your items prior to leaving. This includes putting chairs back to their original spot, picking up trash, etc. Please exit the pool area promptly.
Practice Cancelled Notification: We will do our best to notify you of practice cancellations as early as possible. The Broadway Sharks use Remind as our communication platform. Please download this app and enter the following class code @bwaysharks. Cancellations are typically due to weather, but sometimes the pool has unexpected maintenance they have to do while the pool is closed.
Meet Information: Meets are as follows: June 20, 27, July 5, 11, and 18, 2023. Champs will be held on Saturday, July 29 at Westover due to JMU’s pool being renovated. To participate in Champs, swimmers have to participate in at least two regular season meets.
Annual Team T-shirt: 2023 T-shirt designs* are due June 9th; voting will take place June 12-16 during practices. Orders will be taken June 19-23. Previous Winner Designs.
* The design for this t-shirt is a contest. Swimmers are invited to design the front of the t-shirt. Entries should be on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of plain paper and scanned and emailed to bwaysharks@gmail.com. Designs must be in no more than two colors.
Shark Gear: This is different from the annual team t-shirt. More information will be sent soon and will be available on the website. https://broadwaysharks.com/
Pictures: Pictures will be taken at the pool by Christa Gitchell on Thursday, June 15th. This is on the same night as the Mock Meet.
Facebook Page: If you haven’t already, please go and join the group and then add your Facebook friends that are also members of the Sharks. Here is the link for the Sharks Facebook page, this is a closed group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/266781596816702/

If you have been a Stroke and Turn Judge before, you can recertify by using the link below for $25. Send a copy of your certificate to the bwaysharks@gmail.com and we will get you reimbursed. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url…

Tomorrow night I, Erica Kann, will be in the Broadway Pool parking lot from 5 – 5:50PM to assist anyone with registration issues and/or questions. This is no longer a meeting, just a time for assistance. I now have a meeting at the high school at 6PM for one of my children.
The meeting that was originally scheduled for tomorrow night will be held on June 12 beginning at 7:15PM.
If your child is registered for Test the Waters, please do not register them for the team until after that evening.

Registration for the 2023 Broadway Sharks Swim Season is now OPEN! The price for each swimmer will remain the same as last year and what is listed on the website. The fee will appear cheaper, but a $14 swimmer fee will be added to each swimmer (we used to manually pay this for each swimmer). This fee is for the use of Swimmingly, which is the system we use for timing and swimming records. A 5% processing fee will also be added to your transaction. If you are a new swimmer and unsure if your swimmer will be able to participate, please participate in Test the Waters on Tuesday, May 30th, prior to signing up as we can not refund the $14 swimmer fee. If you are having trouble registering online, Board Members will be available during the All Things Swim – Parent Meeting & More that will be held on Monday, May 22.
Registration will close on Friday, June 2 at 11:59PM.

Sunday – Deadline for any line up changes for Champs @ 2PMMonday – AM/PM as normal
Tuesday – AM/PM as normal
Wednesday – AM (sign making at pool) / 7-8 PM (Godwin Hall, JMU)
Thursday – AM/PM as normal
Friday – 8:45AM as normal
Saturday – 10 & Under warmups @ 8:00AM; 11 & Over warmups @ 12:00PM
Age Up Date: Age on June 1, 2022 will determine the age for the meet. A swimmer is allowed to swim in any age group older than their age, but they may not compete in a younger age bracket. If a swimmer swims “up” in an event, they may not swim in the same event in their own age group.
Swimmers may only wear swim caps that are associated with their team or plain. No VAST or college caps allowed.
Meet Format: The meet will be divided into two sessions, morning and afternoon. With the exception of the graduated relays, swimmers 10 and under will swim in the morning. Swimmers 11 & up will swim in the afternoon. Graduated relays (event #1 and event #2) will start the afternoon session. Therefore, any 10 and under swimmer in a graduated relay will have to stay for this part of the afternoon session. All events, both individual and relay, will be times finals only, and will be pre-seeded.
General Meet Information
Only coaches, officials, workers, and swimmers (when scheduled to swim) are allowed on the pool deck during the meet. Parents, visitors, and swimmers may view the meet from the spectator viewing area on the second floor across from the gym.
- All teams will “camp” in their designated area of the gym assigned by the host team. No food may be brought to the pool deck. Please obey any postings where food and drink will not be permitted that day. Food may only be consumed in the upstairs hallway. No food/drink is allowed inside the gymnasium area. All swimmers and spectators are to stay in or near the pool and gym areas. Signs will be posted indicating any “off-limits” areas. The Clerk of Course will be on the pool deck, with a staging area in the downstairs hallway, outside the pool deck. Swimmers will be responsible for being at the Clerk of Course in time for his/her event. There will be two calls for each event. Announcements will be made in the gym and on the pool deck. We suggest that each team always have parents in the gym to oversee their respective teams while other parents are working. Parking will be available in the parking lot surrounding Godwin Hall, P lot across from Godwin (on I-81 side), and the stadium parking. Please have workers sign in at the volunteer sign-in table in the hallway outside the pool entrance on the ground floor before their session and pick up their work badges. Commonwealth Promotional will be providing T-shirts via preorder and will be given to teams prior to Champs, unless other arrangements have been made. Stroke and turn judges should bring their own clipboards. Stroke and turn judges must be present at the review meeting prior to each session or they will not be allowed to work (this includes relief judges). Judges should also wear navy shorts, a skirt, skort, or slacks, and a white top. For health and safety purposes, any swimmer with an open/bleeding wound will not be allowed in the water unless the wound is covered with a waterproof bandage or the bleeding has stopped. Please encourage your younger swimmers to use the restroom prior to their events.
Ribbons are provided to those that place 1-8th.

July 5, 2022 Meet
We need more volunteers – if you haven’t volunteered this season, now is the time. Swim Meets: July 5, 2022 Swim Meet @ Home against ERRA (signupgenius.com)
We are gearing up for another meet and again, it is home. It will be against ERRA, which is a bigger team than us, so it will be crowded at the pool. The meet will be at Broadway beginning at 6PM. Swimmers please arrive at 5PM and meet in the grassy area outside the pool for stretching. Swimmers will not be allowed in the pool area until at least 5:10PM. Parents are asked to stay in the grassy area outside the pool or near their vehicles until 5:30PM, unless you are helping to set up for the meet. Our team will warm up from 5:00 – 5:25PM. ERRA will begin warm ups at 5:25 and I have sent an email letting them know that parents will not be allowed in the pool area until 5:30PM.
- It is very important that we have ALL volunteer positions filled prior to the meet so we are not seeking volunteers and providing instructions more than once. As mentioned before, swim meets are no joke and they DO NOT happen without volunteers.
- It is VERY important to put your swimmer(s) three digit number on their body with a sharpie that is easily read and seen. From now on, please place a “B” prior to the number.
- Remind your swimmer(s) to stay in the pool until all swimmers are done. Good sportsmanship is something Broadway strives for.
If you are ordering team t-shirts, please place your order through the following link no later than Wednesday, July 6. https://broadwaysharks.com/teamgear You can bring your payment to a practice.
Also, we have been asked by the town/pool to spray down the bathroom floors during the last half hour on the mornings we have practice. This is so the bathrooms are clean when the facility opens to the public at 11AM. Pool staff will clean toilets and do the floors each night between 7-8PM. Please help us keep the pool facilities nice and sign up for a shift today. Broadway Sharks 2020: Bathroom Cleaning (signupgenius.com)
If you still have ducks, please bring them ASAP! We still have around 20 more to sell for races 11-15.

Tonight’s Meet
Ducks and pictures will be available outside the gate from 5:00 – 5:30PM.
The meet will be at Broadway TONIGHT beginning at 6PM. Swimmers please arrive at 5PM and meet in the grassy area outside the pool for stretching. Swimmers will not be allowed in the pool area until at least 5:10PM. - Please do not block the entrance way to the pool. Parents, unless volunteering to help set up for the meet, will not be allowed into the pool area until 5:30PM. Please note that we will be setting up the deck a little differently for this meet, so we want to have areas blocked off before parents enter.

- Make sure you and your swimmer know which events they are swimming. Clerk of Course will assist them getting in the right lane and heat. However, the swimmer knowing that information helps too.
- Remind your swimmer(s) to stay in the pool until all swimmers are done. Good sportsmanship is something Broadway strives for.
If you bring and set up a tent tonight, it needs to be secured to the ground.
We are trying something new this meet, we will have the scoring tent and starter where it is highlighting pink below. The clerk of course will be where the scoring tent used to be. Parents you may set up in the deep end if you wish and around the scoring tent, but please make sure to leave a path for swimmers to get to the clerk of course.

We just got word that JMU has postponed their renovations to Godwin. This allows us to have Champs there again this year. This is great news as we now don’t have to worry about the weather as we will be indoors. Please note, to participate in Champs, your swimmer must compete in at least two (2) regular season swim meets.
THANK YOU to all who have already signed up to volunteer on Tuesday night. We only have one more slot to fill. Clerk of Course – 2nd Half. Swim Meets: June 28, 2022 Swim Meet @ Home against Massanutten (signupgenius.com)

Good afternoon,
I wanted to take a moment to follow up with everyone after last night. I apologize about the picture information that I had sent out. The photographer changed directions on me and I just rolled with it.
Follow up to the Mock Meets –
First of all…were there mistakes, yes. Is it okay, yes. A big part of having the Mock Meet is to get those mistakes out of the way prior to real meets. Have swimmers/coaches/parents learn the process and get jitters out of the way. We are lucky that our next meet is away to get the full experience as visitors and not the home team. It also gets new swimmers times within the system to assist with placing them in the right heat within the events so they are racing other swimmers around the same level.
- It is very important that we have ALL volunteer positions filled prior to the meet so we are not seeking volunteers and providing instructions more than once. As mentioned before, swim meets are no joke and they DO NOT happen without volunteers. A big shout out to all those that stepped up last night to help and make the meet happen. Last night we didn’t even have all the volunteer positions posted. For the next meet (which will be held at Spotswood beginning at 6PM) we need a total of 26 volunteers – please sign up NOW. Swim Meets: June 21, 2022 Swim Meet @ Spotswood (signupgenius.com)
Some things to know about Spotswood – it is a tight pool area and parking is limited. Please try to reduce the number of vehicles you take to the meet and there is no room for tents. There will be a lot of people as we both have a large team. We will share more information about arrival time, etc prior to Tuesday. Please go into SwimminglyClub House to declare your swimmer for Tuesday ASAP. Swimmingly ™
Don’t forget that there is Stroke and Turn Judge training tonight at JMU from 6:30-8pm in Godwin Hall, 344.
Also, don’t forget today is the last day for your swimmer(s) to vote for their favorite t-shirt design. 2022 Annual Broadway Sharks T-Shirt Design – Google Forms We have had 80 out of 165 swimmers vote.
For the home meet in two weeks we will be having a concession stand. I need two volunteers to help get logistics together this coming week. PLEASE let me know if you can assist with this. It is behind the scenes work.
Erica
