Good afternoon Sharks,
Here are the signups for next week: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040545adae2da6f49-sharks6
Remember to only sign up for 3 practices at first. After Saturday at 7pm, you can sign up for any open spot and have more than 3 practices. But we need to give everyone a chance to sign up for 3 practices first so that we don’t close anyone out. If you sign up for more than 3 before Saturday, you will be removed from any additional practices (our choice!). So please wait until Saturday before you sign up for more than 3.
The reason that we are restricted to 3 practices a week is because we have another MEET on Tuesday night! This will be Freestyle and Breaststroke. Make sure you sign up by FRIDAY (that’s tomorrow) for the meet on Tuesday!
We also need a few more volunteers. We need a sweep judge for both sessions. This person gets a clear view of all the action and records which swimmers come in 1st-6th in each heat. It is a back up to our stop watch times. We also need a runner for the 11&O session. This person collects timer sheets halfway through the session. That’s it! The rest of the time you are free to watch the meet up close.
The same social distancing procedures will be in place with no spectators and volunteers and anyone inside the gates required to wear masks. GREAT job following procedures this week. You made me very proud of our team! More instructions will come on the different volunteer jobs and the timing. We will move the 11&O session up a bit since we went so quickly this week.
These are results JUST for our team. We are still working on the technicalities of merging the other team’s results virtually. So these are the places you will get. Once we get the merged results, we will send them out and post them. But what I want you to see is your improvement from your entry (seed) time! Congratulations on your hard work this summer! Keep working hard and try to improve your freestyle time each week.
Check the sign up before you come to practice each day to make sure you are signed up. We have had several no shows and swimmers showing up without sign ups that are probably from looking at the wrong sign up or not remembering.

Good evening Sharks,
Here is next week’s practice sign up sheet. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040545adae2da6f49-sharks5
Since we have our meet on Tuesday night, we will not have practice Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Please only sign up for 3 practices for next week before Saturday at 7pm. After 7pm you may sign up for any open spot.
Be sure to sign up for our meet on Tuesday: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040545adae2da6f49-july
Thanks to all who have volunteered! We have most of our spots covered. We still need Clerk of Course volunteers! This is an important job. You can be inside the pool deck to watch your swimmer swim and help get other swimmers to their lanes on time.
For the 11&O session we still need a runner and sweep judge and S&T if you are certified. We need a videographer for both sessions! It would be nice to put this live on Facebook. Please volunteer to do this and get a great view AND help other parents see the live action!
Go Sharks!

Good afternoon Sharks,
I have approval from the pool to hold our virtual meets on the next 3 Tuesdays. Set up will start at 6pm. Warm ups will start at 6:30pm for 10&U swimmers. Meet will start a little before 7pm for 10&U swimmers and probably run for about 1 hour. After that, we will clear the pool area and get ready for the 11&O swimmers with warm ups starting at 8:20pm and lasting about 1.5 hours.
Be sure to read all instructions and sign up to volunteer! Please sign up to volunteer for both sessions if you can.
Sign up here! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040545adae2da6f49-july
We will have 2 separate sessions. The first session for 10&U and the second for 11&O. These meets will actually just be special practice sessions where swimmers will get timed and each will swim 2 events. The first meet will be freestyle and backstroke. 10&U will swim 25 meters (1 length) and 11&O will swim 50 meters (2 lengths). We will have 1 timer per lane, a starter, judges, clerk of course volunteers, etc. We still need to maintain social distancing at this swim meet.
We will need A LOT of volunteers to make this work! Here is a run down of some of the positions:
Check in/Temperature Scan: Yes, we still need to do this.
Timers: To maintain distance, we will just use 1 timer per lane. Timers will use stopwatches and write down the time on a clipboard. Best seat in the house!
Head Timer: Will start 2 watches to substitute in case someone misses the start or their watch malfunctions.
Sweep Judge: Write down the placings for each heat. This will help offset only 1 timer per lane.
Clerk of Course: We will not use the chairs, so volunteers will need to call for names and line swimmers up behind the start staying 10′ apart.
Stroke and Turn Judges – If you were certified last year, please sign up! We will have a quick refresher course. Sign up for both sessions if you can.
Starter, Computer Operator and Meet Director are all certified positions. If anyone is interested in shadowing one of the positions to learn it, let me know. But do not sign up on the sign up sheet.
Videographer – If anyone has equipment for this, please let me know. We would like to video and livestream the meet. If no one has specialized equipment, someone with a phone and Facebook Live would work!
Concessions – we are working on having a minimal concession stand.
Now for the bad news… We need to limit the number of people on deck. Little Sharks may have 1 parent on deck with them if they need help. No additional siblings, please. Bring your own chairs to sit in. Big Sharks 1 and Big Sharks 2 may not have a parent on deck with them. Parents will need to either volunteer to be inside the pool gates or they may set up chairs outside the pool fence to watch. All volunteers, parents, coaches and spectators inside the pool deck must wear a mask at all times (with the exception of the starter when starting a race). Swimmers are encouraged to wear a mask when not swimming, especially if they are near other swimmers. Spectators outside the pool deck are encouraged to wear masks if they are within 6′ of non-household members.
Otherwise rules are the same as for practice. Do NOT move any deck furniture. Maintain social distancing inside (and outside) the pool deck. Enter through the main gate and exit through the side gate. Only one person in the rest rooms at a time. No changing or showering. Please arrive dressed to swim and leave in your swimsuit. No sharing water bottles, goggles or food. Swimmers should put their things on the ground, 10′ away from others. No touching: handshakes, fist bumps, hugs, (sorry!) or spitting (not really sorry).
Sign up to volunteer and sign up your swimmer by FRIDAY! We need to have enough volunteers to make this run. We will not be able to recruit volunteers the day of the meet. There will be no practice these Tuesday nights and no practice the following Wednesday morning. So for this week, we will ask all swimmers to sign up for only 3 practices to start. Please sign up for the meet as your fourth practice!
Sign up here! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040545adae2da6f49-july
Let me know if you have questions. Meet results will be combined virtually with another team and ribbons will be awarded by age group. Heats will be by stroke and time and possibly gender and not by age group.

Good evening Sharks,
The practice calendar for Week 4 sign ups is available here: https://www.signupgenius.com/index.cfm?go=s.signup&urlid=9040545adae2da6f49-sharks4&view=calendar
Also, save the dates! We will be holding our virtual meets on Tuesdays, 7/14, 7/21, and 7/28. Each meet will consist of 2 strokes. 7/14 will be Freestyle and Backstroke. 7/21 will be Freestyle and Breaststroke. 7/28 will be Freestyle, Butterfly and Individual Medley. Every swimmer will swim both strokes (IM at the last meet will be optional for the 11&O)! This is the perfect opportunity to put what you have been learning to the test. Meets will be broken into 2 sessions, 10&U and 11&O. More details and times will be forthcoming. This will not be a regular meet, and heavy COVID precautions will be in place, including spectators staying outside the fence. But swimmers will race as usual. A limited number of parents for Little sharks will be allowed inside. We will combine our times with other teams for places and ribbons. We will need a lot of volunteers. So if you want to be up close to the action, volunteer! Signups for swimmers and volunteers will be posted soon.
Be sure to order a team shirt for this year! Orders will be taken at practice.
Go Sharks! Summer 2020 will be a summer to remember!

Good afternoon Sharks,
Week 3 Practice sign ups are available! This is the calendar view to make finding the dates easier. Click on the date you want to sign up and then find the right session and group. You have to change the month to get to the rest of the week.
Volunteer Positions – Starting with next week when Virginia moves into Phase 3, we have eliminated the Social distance monitor position. We will need to keep up social distancing inside the pool gates. But swimmers (and parents) have been doing a good job of this. I have attached the Volunteer position descriptions to this email. Copies are available at the pool. Please review the duties before coming to practice. One important thing to remember is that the Little Sharks volunteers will have to set up the table and get the supplies and the Big Sharks 2 volunteers will need to put the table and supplies away.
Cancellation Policy – Because we have a limited number of slots for swimmers at each practice, and sometimes practices are full, please be sure to remove yourself or your swimmer from the sign up if you find you cannot make it to practice. Please do this as soon as possible. But if you find this is a last minute cancellation, please email me or Coach Richard (rmorrell@harrisonburg.k12.va.us) to let us know. If you need to cancel your signup for a volunteer position, please take the following steps:
- Remove yourself from the signup asap.
- Look at the sign up and try to find someone who can take your place.
- Post on Facebook that you need to find a replacement for your position, give the day and time.
- Email me or Robin Anderson (ander2rd@gmail.com) so that we can email the swimmers that are signed up for that practice to look for a replacement.
Practice Cancellation – We will need to cancel practice if we don’t have volunteers actually signed up. Please be sure to sign up for a volunteer position when you sign your swimmer up. It should not be a problem to get just 2 volunteers per practice. But it becomes very important to find a replacement if you find you cannot make it to volunteer. Cancellation notices will be sent out by 9pm the night before for morning practices and by 2pm for afternoon practices. This week, Big Sharks 1 is in danger of cancellation Thursday (tomorrow) morning. Please sign up if you have a child in that practice.
Picture Day – Gitchell’s Photography will be at the pool on Thursday to take individual pictures. Please fill out an order form before arriving to the pool. These are available at practice. Little Sharks (and siblings) please arrive at 6:45pm. Big Sharks 1 and siblings, please arrive at 7:05. Big Sharks 2 please arrive at 7:25. We will limit the number of swimmers in the pool area at a time. Make sure you check in for practice after getting your photos.

Dear Shark Families,
Pictures are scheduled for Thursday (June 25th) evening starting at 6:45. If your youngest shark is a Little Shark, please arrive by 6:45. If your youngest shark is a Big Shark 1 swimmer, please arrive by 7:05. If your youngest shark is a Big Shark 2 swimmer, please arrive by 7:25. Two pictures will be taken: 1) the traditional individual picture with your child sitting on the diving board and 2) then a standing picture that will be used to create a merged group picture.
It is important for the picture form(s) to be completed before you arrive at the pool. Also, please attach (staple or paperclip) your payment (EXACT CASH or CHECK ONLY) to the completed picture form. Again, please do this before you arrive at the pool. Sharks will be admitted only a couple of swimmers at a time for pictures so that we may maintain social distancing.
If your shark is also scheduled to swim Thursday night, please exit the pool after their pictures are taken and have your shark check in for swim practice at the check-in table, as usual.
We do not have a makeup date scheduled yet, but will text that out once the date is finalized.
Picture forms may be picked up at the check-in table.
Respectfully,
Robin
